SECURITY BULLETIN Thefts of catalytic converters on North Campus
The Department of Public Safety received two reports this weekend from Northwood Community residents that the catalytic converters on their cars had been stolen. A catalytic converter, which is part of the vehicle's exhaust system, can be accessed from underneath the vehicle. It appears that these thefts probably occurred during the week of Sept. 17 while the vehicles were parked in Northwood parking lots. In similar incidents across the county, the thieves reportedly crawled under the vehicles and used battery-operated saws to remove the converters in a matter of minutes.
Residents of Northwood Community Apartments should take the following actions:
- Check your vehicle for a loud noise. A mechanic can verify whether or not the converter has been removed.
- If you believe your converter was removed in recent days, contact DPS to file a police report. Call (734) 763-1131.
- If you recall seeing any suspicious behavior or hearing any suspicious noises that might be connected with these incidents, please call DPS at (734) 763-1131.
